The minimal amount of training (on line or hands on) required to get a permit to carry a concealed handgun is not enough to qualify the average person to be judge, jury and executioner.

That is the most ridicules thing I have ever heard! Not only does it sound very unsafe for someone with no hands on training to operate a gun, but how do you know who is really on the other side of the computer getting the permit. Many people get their identity stolen every year now they have to worry about someone getting a consoled weapons permit in their name as well.

ALL THOUGH IT SEEMS TO BE SIMPLE TO OPTANEYOUR PERMIT WITH THIS LAW, IT WILL NOW PUT HAND GUNS IN THE HANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO I MEAN NO ON HANDS WITH A HAND GUN. THIS IN TURN WILL MOST LIKELY LEED TO MORE UNANSERD SHOOTINGS AND ACSADENTS ,CHILDREN FINDING THRM AND USEING THEM BECAUSE THE PEOPLE GETING THE PERMIT DONT HAVE THE PROPER TRANING ,THAT THE NRA CORSES OFFER YES SOME PEOPLE TAKE THE TIME BUTTT THERE ARE THE FEW THAT DONT AND THAT SHOULD BE THE ONES THAT THE GOVERMENT SHOULD HAVE LOOKED AT BEFOR PASSING THIS LAW I HOPE IT DOSENT BACK FIER OR IT WILL BE A SET BACK FOR GUN OWNERS AS WE KNOW IT IN VA THANK YOU ERNIE SMITH....

The government should not require training at all. They have no business doing it. However, one would have do be a fool or idiot to carry on the street without a great deal of training. On-line training is not enough. NRA Basic Pistol is not enough. One should go out for some REAL training. But, the government should not be allowed to require it. This is a matter of personal responsibility. What ever happened to THAT?

Even if criminals were to take the course online, they still would have to go to their local courthouse and apply for the permit. If they have a criminal record they would not be allowed to get a concealed carry permit. Funny, this story ommitted this crucial detail. I am not surprised however that TV3 would not give the full facts on the the process for obtaining a concealed weapons permit in the state of Virginia. In order to obtain a permit you must show that you have had a proper gun safety course, apply for the permit, pay a $50 fee, submit to a State Police background check and have a Judge sign off. This article would lead you to believe that all you do is take an online course and "presto" you can start to carry a concealed weapon. Truly a lack of journalistic investigation or an intentional act of misleading. Either way not honest journalism. Virginia is an open carry state, meaning, you do not need a permit to carry a handgun in plain sight. Why bother with the truth.

The shall-issue law does not and did not require actual range time to qualify for your concealed carry permit, although many courses offer it. That aspect did not change with this new law. As far as criminals using the online test to apply for a permit, A. criminals don't care about permits (duh) and B. any applicant for a CHP must go through a background check. IMHO, there should be no permit needed for law abiding citizens to carry concealed. The permit is nothing more than a tax on gun owners.
