A motorcycle accident Thursday morning backed up traffic outside of Elkton for miles on Route 33 East.
State police say a block of wood on the roadway caused the crash.
Master State Trooper John Styles says 49-year-old Cecil James Watts of Elkton may have been driving too close to the car in front of him and did not see the block early enough to react.
Both lanes of traffic on Route 33 east were blocked off for at least a half hour.
Shannon Hensley was driving into Harrisonburg, and she saw the accident in her rear view mirror.
She says, "I looked up in my rear view mirror, and he just started losing control and wiped out."
Styles says, "He was up for 50 feet, fighting the motorcycle. It was trying to fishtail, he went down and slid for 226 feet and ejected him."
State Police characterize Watts' injuries as serious, but not life-threatening. He was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Police say Watts will not be charged in the accident.
