A rescue attempt to save a swimmer at Sherando Park Lake Thursday was unsuccessful and officials say a 14-year-old boy is dead.
Emergency crews searched the lake for the teen. He was last seen in the middle of the lake, wearing black trunks and no shirt.
Witnesses say they saw the boy go under the surface of the water and never come back up.
Emergency crews received the call shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday. The rescue team pulled a body out of the water shortly before 7 p.m.
The boy would have been a freshman at Sherando High School in the fall.
