Plans to clean up a historical building in the Valley are moving forward. Phase one began Monday to secure the old DeJarnette State Sanitorium off of Route 250 in Staunton.
People at the Frontier Culture Museum say the week-long phase consists of cleaning up heavy shrubbery and debris surrounding the building.
They say the building has trouble with break-ins and, because of asbestos, a cleanup is needed more than ever.
Thanks to money from the Department of General Services, they hope to finish within the month.
John Avoli from the Frontier Culture Museum says, "Phase one is quite awesome. After 15 years of vegetation growing, it's finally coming to the point where it's going to be cleared. So this will take about a week, a week and a half. Then the boarding up of the building should take the balance of July."
Avoli says all the boards covering windows, doors and holes in the building will be painted white to maintain the aesthetic beauty of the historical building.
