For the third time in eight months, the safety initiative Operation Air, Land and Sped is back along interstates 81 and 95.
In Rockingham County alone, state police are tripling patrols through Saturday in the hope of cracking down on speeding and reckless drivers.
Troopers say the operation is especially important due to an increase in summer travelers.
First Sgt. Bryan Hutcheson with Virginia State Police says, "We're hoping to just get that message across. We're in peak holiday season now. People are going on vacations and just get the message across. Take your time, plan your trip and just get there safely."
During the last Operation Air, Land, and Speed in May, almost 7,000 tickets were issued across the state.

My ticket wasn't even honest! I wasn't speeding! Officer wouldn't even look me in the eye, I knew he was lying. Now I know why! OUt of state, won't fight it! I also won't spend the same $3,000 I did this year in Va. for vacation next year! Try promoting tourisum,, not fear of State police. I felt safer swimming in the ocean with the sharks than driving out of Va! Plus the lesson two you kids in the back seat learned that day, worst experience I ever had with a state police officer. Try being considerate officer LockH***! You were wrong. God Bless.
I like that tax revenue isn't enough, so the state has to run a casual shakedown robbing of it's citizenry.
Some "safety initiative". My Friday commute was considerably more dangerous than usual with folks "packing" and doing abrupt slow downs to well below 60 mph (in a 65 zone) because they noticed a cop and freaked. Let's just admit that a cash strapped VA is looking for revenue and be done with it.
