Rockingham county Sheriff's Officials are searching for the body of an infant they say was dumped in the garbage. They have been searching all morning at the county landfill in Harrisonburg.

They are calling this search a body recovery, not a rescue. Officials assume that this baby died not long after it was born last Thursday.

County Sheriff's Officials say the baby was born in a public restroom, and then put in a dumpster. Detectives say the mother is a college age woman. They have not yet released her identity. The sheriff's office found out about the infant last night, and began the search immediately.

Investigators say they are searching the landfill for a bag that they were told the baby was wrapped in. "Based on the information that we received we were able to identify the mother of the infant. and she at this point is cooperating fully and giving us the information that we need in order to initiate the search for the body," says Sargent Felicia Glick of the Rockingham Co. Sheriff's Office.

As of right now, the body of the infant has not been found. Investigators say charges have also not been filed against the mother, but they are likely to come as the investigation continues.
