This story has tugged at the heart strings of many across the Valley, and one local woman says this young woman needed somewhere to turn to when she was desperately in need of help but obviously felt there was no one. Marcie Phares knows what it's like to be in the shoes of the young woman who placed her baby in a dumpster Thursday night.

"When I was 19 I found myself unwed, and pregnant and was very scared," says Marcie Phares. But Phares got help at a pregnancy crisis center and now she wants other young women to know there are other options out there.

"You don't have to give that child up for abortion; there's people that can take your baby for you and you don't have to go to such an extent as what happened here recently," says Phares.

That's why Phares wants to reach out.

"Just any kind of support can change a person's life and change a person's mind. And you know, make a better decision," says Phares.

But Phares also wants young women to be aware of the Safe Haven Law, a law which allows a parent to leave an infant up to 14 days old at either a hospital or a rescue squad that provides 24-hour emergency services. The law also protects the parent from being charged of a crime.

"And I'm thinking if I didn't know that, certainly maybe this girl did not know that, and if she did, then this could have been prevented," says Phares.

Phares says maybe the community can learn from this incident, and maybe more people will be aware of this law. She says young women need to know of the places they can turn to if they need help, even if it just saves one life.
