An elderly woman was allegedly abused and threatened by her three caregivers until she ended up in the hospital.
Robert Mitchell and Gracia and Timothy Propst were arrested in Augusta County after allegedly abusing and stealing from an elderly woman.
In April, when the victim's biological son became too sick to care for her, her adopted son and two of his friends stepped in to fill the job.
The elderly woman's biological son suspected mistreatment and checked in on her.
Deputies say the woman was taken to the hospital with bedsores and signs of obvious neglect around August 14.
During the investigation, Augusta County Sheriff's deputies also learned that more than $5,000 was taken from the victim's bank account.
According to the sheriff's office, the three people would take the woman to the bank, at first with her using a walker and later on with her in a wheelchair, and have her cash checks to give them the money.
Officers suggest the victim suffered emotional damage as well as physical.
"She was left in bed for days without food. When she would not comply with their requests to turn over the money, they would throw her dog against the wall," says Capt. Glenn Hanger.
Deputies say the three also threatened to burn down the woman's house if she would not give them the money.
As of now the elderly woman, whose name is not being released, is being cared for by hospice at her home.
