The State Board of Elections has approved new voter residency rules that allow college students to vote in the city where they attend school.

With the new rules approved Saturday, college students are able to register to vote using their campus address.

SBE decided that a person's "primary home" is where they live and is the center of their life.

However, residents around Harrisonburg are split when it comes to voting on local issues.

"I think they should be allowed to, because I think it's important for students to be involved in local politics where they are," says Harrisonburg resident Mariana Howdyshell.

"I'm against it because I think the students have more of a vested interest in their hometown and I think they're not tax paying citizens, and they don't really understand the politics of the city that they're coming to school in," says Harrisonburg resident Elaine Keegan.

Before the new rules can be implemented, they must be approved by the Department of Justice.
