October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha are raising money and awareness of the disease.
They are fighting the disease with the best weapon they have: early detection.
Like most sororities, the girls are part of a national philanthropy drive. Unlike many others, the girls of Zeta Tau Alpha are trying to save more than 200,000 women.
"Every day, we are raising so much money and hopefully one day, breast cancer will be completely prevented," says Katherine Thomas, ZTA Philanthropy Co-chair.
The Zeta girls have a number of events planned for October. Thomas remembers one event that really touched her was last year's survivor night.
"One of our girls organized it, and her mother had breast cancer and she was fighting it for 18 years. It really put a face on breast cancer and made you realize how important it was to just be there to support your friends and your family," says Thomas.
For Thomas, this charity means more than just the sorority's philanthropy. She says it hits close to home.
"My grandma died when I was three. I think the biggest thing for me was that the medicine wasn't good back then. Today, it wouldn't have been that bad and she would have survived and I didn't get to know her because of that. So I am glad today the medicine improved so much," says Thomas.
