Friday, just after 8:30 in the morning, Virginia State Police got a call for a single car accident on Frog Pond Road. When Troopers arrived, they found a Mazda Protege abandoned and no one in sight.
"While the trooper was doing his investigation, he discovered that there was quite a bit of mail inside the vehicle," says Sgt. Robert Chappell.
To be exact, there were almost 1,000 pieces of mail with various names and addresses. Police believe the mail was taken out of individual mailboxes.
And, now police say the car was stolen.
"So, we're investigating the accident, who the driver was, who the possible person was who stole the vehicle," says Chappell.
The postal service has already sent all of the 1,000 pieces of mail for fingerprint analysis. They're also notifying all the victims in Augusta, Staunton, and Highland Counties.
"We are interviewing suspects, and we have made no arrests as of this point, but we do have people we are interviewing," says Chappell.
Police are also asking you not to leave mail overnight, and if you're going to be out of town, let the post office know.
