Local investigators have pulled several things from the homes of accused gang members, according to search warrants filed this week.
Harrisonburg Police Lt. Kurt Boshart announced Thursday the arrests of nine people, six adults and three juvenile, alleged to be in gangs.
One of the accused leaders lived near the small community of Tenth Legion. According to an affidavit filed to obtain a search warrant, Juan Jose Ramirez-Valencia is a known local leader of the gang SUR 13.
Casey Wright is a neighbor who moved to the area earlier this year.
"You expect something like that to happen more toward a more urban area, or maybe in Harrisonburg. But, out here you don't expect anything like that," says Wright.
"There's never any crime or violence or anything. So, this would be the last place, especially this far from Harrisonburg, that I would expect that," says Janet Smith, who grew up in the area.
According to search warrant affidavits, Ramirez-Valencia has been in the Valley since at least 2007. A confidential informant says he's been involved in a local gang initiation called a beat in, where a new member is literally beaten up before joining a gang.
Boshart says Ramirez-Valencia came to the Valley from California and he says a second accused gang leader is from North Carolina.
"Because of their gang ties, [they] ended up meeting with each other and joining forces to terrorize our communities," says Boshart.
In a separate affidavit dealing with another man charged in this case, an investigator writes that witnesses reported hearing popping sounds and seeing car windows shatter in a Harrisonburg neighborhood.
"There are people in the neighborhood who are vigilant, who do look out for each other. And we would notice something suspicious. Or at least you would think anyway," says Wright.
The nine people arrested in the case face a total of 71 charges.
Ramirez-Valencia is charged with three crimes including gang participation, gang recruitment and hazing. His case is scheduled to be tried in December.
