The race for city council has a new addition. Alan Finks announced his candidacy Monday afternoon.
Finks is now one of eight candidates seeking three open council seats. Finks says what he sees as a bad relationship between the council and the school board is one of the reasons he wants to run. He wants to help bring the two groups together.
Finks says he's retiring from Merck, so that would give him more time to devote to the city.
"For 30 years, I've worked shift work and wasn't able to get involved. So now I want to have this chance and I really love the city of Harrisonburg and I want to give to it if I can," said Alan Finks.
Finks also wants to bring the downtown area back to life, and solve the traffic problem.
