We now know who won the huge Mega Millions Jackpot. The big winners are J.R. and Peggy Triplett, of Winchester. Whether you want to call them "winners," or call them "lucky," you can definitely call them "grateful."
For weeks, we've wondered who has that ticket? Where have they been keeping it? Finally, Thursday, the answer came. It turns out that the Valley has two brand-new celebrities.
J.R. and Peggy Triplett of Winchester are the lucky ducks we've been waiting to meet. They've known since the day after the drawing, hearing the numbers broadcast on TV.
J.R. remembers the moment, "I heard 'em say '1-13-20-21-30 and 24,' and I said, 'Sweetheart, we've got those numbers.'"
J.R. says he kept his cool. After 47 years as a truck driver, not too much excites him. "Sweetheart," as J.R. calls his wife, had a different reaction, dropping to her knees and thanking the Lord.
"I didn't believe it. I really didn't believe it," Peggy told reporters.
But they sure believed it today as they were presented with a pretty good reminder, a giant check for $239 million. They've already spent a bit of the money on a promise made a long time ago. J.R. lost a childhood friend, but no money was available for a tombstone. 25 years later, one's been ordered.
J.R., with tears in his eyes, remarked, "I'm a believer. And I talk to the Lord a lot, and I said, 'Lord, if you ever give me a few extra bucks, I'm gonna buy my friend a tombstone.' So it's on its way."
The couple says more sharing will follow. When asked how this big win will change their lives, the couple simply hugged each other and told reporters that they've been married 35 years and have already had a pretty good life.
