Their services are vital to businesses throughout the Valley, and they often face big safety threats on the road.

This week, truckers across the nation are being recognized for what they do.

Truckers are on the road for weeks or months at a time, and they say without them, everything would stop.

For ten years, Scott Kaelin has been driving an 18-wheeler, and after ten years, he still loves his job.

"The adventure, you get to travel wherever you want, the freedom. I love it, it's in my blood. My father's trucked for 52 years," says Kaelin.

Kaelin says there are some places they go where people show appreciation for truckers.

"Yeah, a little bit here and there. Rest areas and stuff like that, but a lot of rest areas are shutting down in Virginia," says Kaelin.

Kaelin says those closed rest areas have become a problem.

"Affects everybody. You know it's hard to do our log books, it's hard to get stopped in the right places. All the truck stops are full of trucks. There's no places for us to park out here," says Kaelin.

Trucker Richard Waite says he feels truckers are definitely underappreciated for what they do.

"It's not considered a skilled trade when it should be. We're more regulated than any other profession out there, really," says Waite.

Businesses such as Home Depot say truck drivers are a crucial part of their every day routine.

"I'd say 90 percent of our deliveries are through truck drivers. We have multiple different companies that deliver things, but everything is through truck drivers," says Home Depot Assistant Manager Scott Lanier.

With millions of truck drivers, Kaelin says he and his fellow drivers keep things moving.

"You need us. America needs us. Without us, it's not going to work," says Kaelin.

Many truckers say the biggest challenge or danger they face on the job is dealing with smaller vehicles on the road.

The truckers say cars will frequently cut them off or not leave enough room for their 18-wheelers to slow down or make turns.

Trucker Appreciation Week runs through November 7.

I have driven this stretch of Hwy with many Truckers, live with an ex-driver of long haul and there are just as many 4 wheel drivers that suck as 18 wheel drivers. Just try being conscience of your own driving.

Well, Anonymous, not all truckers tailgate! If you are such a perfect driver, and I'm assuming you have never tailgated anyone, why don't you play "cop", get a license tag #, find out who they are and ask them yourself why they were tailgating! You people make me sick that are always putting down the truckers. Maybe you ought to drive one before you criticize. These drivers are out there away from friends and family, some for long periods of time, they are usually on a time schedule which doesn't allow them to sleep.....Give them a break and quit your whining!

R, We all know they can't "stop on a dime". My one and only question is "Why do they tailgate at 60-70MPH"? Any guess on that?
