Vigils and protests to the execution of John Allen Muhammad happened around the state Tuesday night.
As the clock rang 9 p.m. in downtown Harrisonburg, protesters with the Harrisonburg Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, other churches and community groups stood in silence.
The fellowship organizes vigils each time Virginia executes an inmate. Members say there are better options for punishment, such as life in prison.
One protester says she doesn't believe the death penalty brings any closure to families of victims.
"Killing human beings is wrong and the violence has been wrong," says Chris Edwards, who opposes the death penalty. "Both the violence done in the crimes that took innocent lives and the violence that we feel is done by our state when someone is put to death."
The group will protest in the same location November 17 when a former Army intelligence officer convicted of shooting a Woodbridge couple is scheduled for execution.

I agree we should do away with the death penalty and give these slayers life in prison! That way we as hard working tax paying citizens can feed them give them health benefits and any thing else they so desire to have the rest of their pathetic worthless lives! Then we'll give the Nations tax payers a new Motto! WE BUST OURS SO WE CAN FEED YOURS!
The death penalty is an expression of nothing more than glorified sadism and bloodlust. If you do not see the flaw in such a motivation you should reexamine your personality, because the flaws in it will continue to make you unhappy until you do. Spare me the whining about how the pain of the victims' families somehow entitles them to have their sadistic fantasies satisfied by the state.
Well said Shea...however, I'm afraid it fell on deaf ears. So sad when someone would let their (or anyone's child) be shot to death, and then protest the just treatment of their killer. The world is a sad place!
