Windy and wet conditions dominated the forecast Wednesday and Thursday, but officials are feeling the storm's effects in other ways.

The North River Wastewater Treatment Plant is handling more than double the wastewater it treated last week.

Officials say the plant treats about ten-million gallons of wastewater on a normal, dry day. After the rain Wednesday, the plant handled about 22-million gallons.

Officials say the plant can technically treat about a maximum of 35-million gallons, but Director Sharon Foley says because the plant is under construction, they've had to improvise to effectively treat the water.

She says, "We are designed to handle peak flow that is much higher than the average, normal flow, and even at those peak loadings, we can divert flow into our other basins and maintain treatment."

Foley says operations officials did just that Wednesday, anticipating the heavy rainfall and redirecting wastewater flow into an empty basin.
