Facing falling revenues, one Valley town is considering a tax on cigarettes.

Luray town officials expect revenue from the real estate tax to drop. They say that's partially because they expect real estate assessments to drop.

If approved, customers would pay an additional 15-cent tax for a pack of cigarettes.

Town officials estimate the tax would generate almost $200,000 in the first year. They estimate more than one million packs of cigarettes are sold in the town each year.

Council members have not decided if they want to direct money from this tax to specific areas or put it in the general fund.

If the town council approves the cigarette tax, it would go into effect March 1. The council is expected to take a vote on the issue in mid-December.

I have lived in this shifty place for years. Now they have just gone too far. Let's tax the cigarettes, like they haven't gone up enough as it is. Why not tax those who have felonies, or those that drink and drive. How about those abc stores they could generate more than 200,000 a year as many alcoholics that live in this place. I mean they just keep sticking it to us to line their pockets. Did one of them buy the Tobacco store and need the extra just because they can. It's not like we haven't had enough to be ashamed of in this county, now they want suck everyone dry before they go down with the rest of the "authority" figures we have had. You know since they took such good care of us, huh , ha ha. What a joke.
