Staunton Police are stressing their slogan, Safe for the Holidays, and this year's main fight is against drinking and driving.

For the past five years, Officer Mike Berbes has made the most DUI arrests in Commonwealth, making even more than several top Richmond officers.

Berbes says, "On the holidays, it tends to increase a little bit. People are visiting. They are coming in from out of town and then they are trying to get home after those and if they have a few too many drinks, that can lead to trouble."

While the legal blood alcohol content for a person getting behind the wheel of a car is .08 , Berbes says many don't realize they've had too many.

He says, "It's a socially acceptable type of behavior. A lot of people go out and have several beers and it's just something that people don't think about. They don't realize that they've had too many drinks to drive home."

Since 2007, Officer Lisa Klein says Staunton Police have arrested 515 people for driving under the influence, with Berbes making 113 of those arrests.

Klein says, "Those are only Staunton arrests. Not Augusta County, not Waynesboro, not Virginia, just Staunton arrests. Think about how many people have been arrested for DUIs and how many lives may have been saved."

While Berbes doesn't always like being the "bad cop," he says he's only doing his job to keep the streets of Staunton safe.

Berbes says, "If it just saves one life, it's worth it."

If you plan on drinking, police ask you to have a designated driver or take a cab.

In 2008, the average BAC of those convicted of a DUI in Virginia was 0.1404, almost twice the legal limit.
