Wednesday begins the Thanksgiving holiday travel weekend. AAA reports more people will go home this Thanksgiving.

The auto club says about 1.5 million Virginians are expected to travel 50-miles or more, which is an increase of three percent over the holiday weekend last year.

Nationally, AAA projects a 1.4-percent increase in travel, and most travelers will be going by car.

In Virginia, state troopers are already seeing a major increase from last year.

About 75 percent of the state police force throughout the Commonwealth will be working all day to provide maximum coverage on the roads.

Sgt. Bryan Hutcheson expects to see the highest number of vehicles on the roads Wednesday and Sunday.

He also says, as the highways become congested, their focus will shift.

"As the traffic gets heavier, we kind of change our focus from speeding and reckless driving to the unsafe lane changes and following too closely. When the traffic gets heavy, aggressive driving is usually what you see and that's what we'll pretty much be aggressively enforcing, " says Hutcheson,

To make things easier for drivers, the Virginia Department of Transportation is suspending lane closures for construction and maintenance on major highways from noon Wednesday to noon Monday.
