Fire officials are warning people to get carbon monoxide detectors after 12 were sent to the hospital Monday from a leak at a business in New Market.
Staunton Fire Inspector Shawn Maddox says it should serve as a warning that everybody should have a carbon monoxide detector.
"It’s a year round problem any people who have fuel fired appliances, water heater, anything that involves burning a gas or solid fuel," says Maddox.
Detectors aren't in any law and most businesses don't have them.
"At this point in time there is no requirement in the fire code or building code but with the national events there is a discussion of having requirements in certain occupancies," says Maddox.
Shenandoah Pizza owner John Higgins says, without any code, many businesses like his aren't worried about the detectors.
"I just think most businesses don't think about it, I think with a lot of gas powered equipment it'd be a good idea," says Higgins.
His business is moving to a new location with larger ovens and with carbon monoxide leaks in the news, he's rethinking getting a detector.
"We're all electric right now, bur for speed, we're going to go to gas ovens and I think that could be a good idea for us to have and get a carbon monoxide detector," says Higgins.
For now, plans in our area for a change in carbon monoxide detector laws.
