Larry Wittig reminisces about the time he spent on the Gulf Coast helping victims of Hurricane Katrina re-build their homes.

"You can look at the pictures and you think you can understand the devastation that is there but when you get off the bus or out of the van and you walk on the ground where the disaster has hit, it's almost mind numbing."

Wittig is now helping to organize the Brethren Disaster Response Team auction, that will be held this weekend in Rockingham County, to raise money for victims of natural disasters.

The auction will help send volunteers to the Gulf Coast with supplies to continue the re-building process.

"We actually have four projects in the gulf coast area right now that we're working with0they are staff from Brethren churches all over the country but we try to get staff down there at least once a month to one of those project."

Wittig says Hurricane Katrina took a toll on disaster relief agencies across the country, wiping out many supplies.

"All the disaster relief agencies are hit hard because of that, it just hasn't let up and hopefully one of these days we'll be able to get back to being able to handle disasters ahead of time instead of being behind on them."
