Within minutes of getting into the patrol car with Sergeant A.C. Powers of the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, we had someone pulled over. Sergeant Powers says it's typical to see so many people without seat belts.
"Probably 30 percent of the drivers do not wear seat belts on the off roads. The intestates and more heavily traveled roads, it's probably 80 percent wear them and 20 percent don't."
In Virginia, you can't be pulled over simply for not wearing a seat belt since it's a secondary offense. This is extremely frustrating for law enforcement.
"It's a secondary ticket in other words, you cant stop a vehicle solely because they're not wearing a seat belt if they're speeding, no county tag, illegal turn, stop sign, lights out, anything like that where you have probable cause for the stop, then you can issue a seat belt ticket."
Sgt. Powers says now is the perfect time to enforce the Click It or Ticket campaign. Warmer weather means more accidents are likely to happen.
"It's a good time before summer; people getting ready to travel after schools are out on the holidays; we need to get the adults as well as the children buckled up."
