A bus driver faces a reckless driving charge after hitting a teenager riding a bicycle in Rockingham County.

Virginia State Police say the incident occurred around 8 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Singers Glen and Whitmore Shop roads.

Rebecca Helmick of Harrisonburg was driving a bus for the ARC of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County with six passengers.

No one on the bus was injured in the crash.

However, the 14-year-old bike rider, Solomon McMurray of Harrisonburg, was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center with serious injuries.

Officials do not believe his injuries are life threatening. McMurray was on his way to school when the accident occurred.

Police say Helmick and McMurray were both traveling east on Singers Glen Road and glare from the sun prevented Helmick from seeing McMurray.

The article says he was going TO school. He wasn't going home. Bicycles on the road are a fact of life. We're not going to go away. Motorists need to adapt.

Since the buses were on the road, I am assuming he was riding his bike home, and had no choice but to take the back roads.

Charles, you're quick to draw conclusions without knowing any details of the accident. Using your logic, we could also determine that all automobile drivers should be kept off of narrow county roads because many of them drive too fast and do not pay close enough attention to where they are going.
