Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell plans to re-open some things that were closed during the Kaine administration.

Eighteen rest stops along five of Virginia's interstates may re-open once McDonnell takes office in January.

McDonnell's pledge to re-open more the stops is good news for drivers. Those who travel Interstate 81 say being able to take breaks on long trips is essential for safety.

"We travel to Tennessee once a year. We have a long trip down 81, so it would be nice if the rest stops were open rather than having to leave the highway," says Bob Benson.

McDonnell plans to honor his promise to re-open the stops within 90 days of taking office.

One truck driver, who travels long distance from Canada, is relieved that he will have more places to pull off the highway.

"Sometimes I stop to sleep, or go to the bathroom and get maps," says Alain Belledier.

Rest stops were closed to save the state $9 million against a $2.6 billion deficit.

McDonnell doesn't plan to raise taxes to fund rest stops, but now he must figure out how to pay for their operation.

Does anyone know what rest area is not to be reopened? The article indicates that 18 rest areas will reopen, but the state listed 19 rest areas as closing. I'm not sure if one really will remain closed, or if this is a mistake.

It's about time we have a Governor that takes care of Virginians and the people passing through. Did you see the new "Hilton Style" rest stop as you enter VA from WV? Big screen TV's (like 4 or 5). That was built under Big Gov't Kaine - but that one is using recycled materials so it's ok. Must have cost a few million. Our tax dollars pay for rest stops - I want to be able to use them and feel safe! Prison trustees are good workers. Don, Wake Up and stop watching CNN!
