There's been a decision on an issue that's caused debate for three years in Rockingham County.
The county planning commission approved an ordinance to allow short-term rentals at Massanutten Resort Tuesday night.
Commissioner Jon Ritenour says they felt, since Massanutten is a resort community, short-term rentals should be allowed.
Ritenour says the Massanutten Property Owners Association has the power to govern restrictions under the ordinance.
There are 1,000 homes at the resort and 40 to 60 of them are rentals.

The irony is that for all of the news articles, this is a nonissue. The courts issued an order three years ago that short-term rentals are permissible under the Rockingham County zoning ordinance. So there has been no question for three years now. What the County's current proposal means is that the County was getting sick and tired of responding to ridiculous claims from those who oppose short-term rentals. Those who oppose short-term rentals, most of whom moved only recently to Massanutten, have now truly worn out their welcome. This should be the final nail in the coffin for those who oppose short-term rentals. They were fighting a losing battle and had to make up stories of prostitution and crime, which of course is a just a total joke. Sadly, they are determined and will continue to waste away their life trying to oppose the totally legal and permissible (and peaceful) rental of homes in their resort neghborhoods. Now hopefully, enough residents will help make peace.

Is that "40 to 60" homes or 40-60 percent of homes? I know of at least three dozen homes, including the ones on either side of me, that are rented regularly, and I find it hard to believe that while being acquainted with only a few dozen people in Massanutten, I know a possible 3/4 of the ones with rental properties near them. I think your statistics may refer to what are being reported as full time rentals, not those people running under the wire doing short term rentals.

So happy that this has come to an end. I am a full time resident in Massanutten and when I bought here 7 years ago I knew there would be vacationers all around me or I would not have purchased a home in a resort. The people who are opposed to short term renting should now put their time & energy into more meaningful things. There are volunteer opportunities all around the valley it is so much more constructive than bickering. Be grateful you can afford to have a home and live in such a beautiful place!
