A change in the speed limit may be in store for interstates 64 and 81.
Gov. Bob McDonnell proposed the increase Monday night in his State of the Commonwealth address.
"Eighty-one is very crucial. And there is more and more traffic on it every day it seems like," says Jeff Fitzwater, who travels on I-81 frequently.
Traveling to Shenandoah University and Northern Virginia, Fitzwater says he thinks 70 mph is the magic number.
"I think upping the speed limit would be beneficial to car drivers. I'm not sure that it would be as beneficial to 18-wheelers because of the fact that they have a lot of weight to stop, and if you did have to stop it could be a problem," says Fitzwater.
When it comes to big rigs, Michael Macleod, who's been driving trucks for 33 years, says he doesn't like the idea.
"I think the trucks doing 65 is sufficient. If we were out in Texas where it was flat, I'd think that would be fine. But with these hills and mountains, I think that's a good speed," says Macleod.
Macleod says governors, which are devices that can control how fast a truck can go, on trucks like his would be a safety issue. Macleod's governor is set to 63 mph.
"See your problem will be you'll have cars out there doing 70, you'll have trucks out there doing 70, then you'll have a truck like me that can only do 63. And everybody's trying to get around everybody else," says Macleod.
While some statistics show an increased speed means increased road deaths, Fitzwater doesn't think the five mph increase will be a problem.
"I don't think so. I mean there's a lot of states that already have that and I've driven through those states and I don't know that they have more wrecks than any other state does," says Fitzwater.
Fitzwater says he doesn't think the speed limit increase would cause drivers to go even faster than they do now.
Currently, 32 states have a highway speed limit of 70 mph.

This speed limit increase is a bad bad idea. Leave it the way it is now. An increase in accidents we do not need. Please reconsider.
I feel the Need For Speed! Awesome! I go that speed anyway, so now I won't have to worry about getting ticketed. WV is 70 and I go 70. You Go Bob! Love It!
Here in Ca the speed limit is 65-70 Mph for cars and 55Mph for trucks. The speed difference works out great!
