Poultry Litter Power Plant for Page?

A commercial proposal that could bring new jobs and new energy to Page County is big news, but not everyone appears to favor the plan.

The company Fibrowatt, a subsidiary of Homeland Renewable Energy Inc, is considering using land from Project Clover near Stanley as a site for a poultry power plant.

According to its website, Fibrowatt takes poultry litter and burns it in a furnace, creating nutrient rich ash and steam to turn electricity-creating turbines.

Some residents in Page County worry about the waste products associated with burning biomass.

Lee McWhorter, who ran for a Page County Board of Supervisors position, says he's done his research and has dealt with some of the potential waste from a plant like this.

"It's a significant source of Dioxin, which was a defoliant used in Vietnam and Agent Orange. Forty percent of us that are back here alive today, Vietnam Veterans, have Type II Diabetes caused by Dioxin," says McWhorter.

The company says it is a form of clean energy and steam mainly comes from its smokestacks, but McWhorter says he doesn't believe it.

"We don't need dirty energy. If you're going to lie to us, make it credible," says McWhorter.

John Woodward, a Page County Supervisor, explains that they still have a lot of their own research to do before making any decisions.

"We'll look at the environmental issues. They'll look at the transportation part of it. We will look at the roads. How it affects the roads and how it affects the community," says Woodward.

Woodward explains that nothing has been decided yet.

"No decision has been made for them to come, and no decision from the board has been made to accept it. So as of right now, it is just preliminary talking," says Woodward.

The board of supervisors has asked residents to be open minded as all of the research is conducted.

Woodward adds, if the plan does go forward, ground breaking wouldn't likely occur for another year.

On March 2, Fibrowatt will be speaking at the Page County Board of Supervisors meeting about a plan for a poultry litter power plant in Page County.
