A federal bill dealing with immigration reform is gaining support in the Valley.
Harrisonburg's City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to support the DREAM Act, also called "The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act."
The proposed law pertains to young, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States before turning 16.
If passed through Congress, it would allow these young people to pursue higher education or military service. It would also provide them a path toward citizenship.
A coalition of local residents has been trying to build local support for the bill.
They made a presentation at Tuesday night's council meeting, saying they had collected hundreds of signatures from local residents also in support of the bill.

I am disappointed to say the least. Harrisonburg votes unanimously to support the DREAM act. Do they REALLY support the majority of residents? I don't think this lady should be getting any honors. She should be on the bus and headed back to Mexico. What good are laws if we are going to allow certain groups of people to ignore them and then hold other people to standards? Mrs. Garst. You shouldn't be prosecuting anyone unless you do right in this matter. I don't doubt the council would approve this. They're greatly influenced by JMU and i would expect nothing else. Nice to know that this type of moralism has made its way to the valley.
I fully support the DREAM Act. Educate yourself on the issues and you will, too. We are all human beings, some people were just born within the borders of the United States. If you have a heart and a mind you will be for this bill. Every American, besides the Native American tribes, are here because one of our ancestors immigrated here. We are a nation of immigrants and people who know nothing about the topic like to blame immigrants for the nation's problems. How about helping them? Stop blaming others for your problems and do something to benefit humanity. Help young people who have been educated in the United States go on to college or military service and get the opportunity to better themselves, and then return the favor by improving society and their community (Harrisonburg). Stop being so narrow minded and ask yourself what God would do. Would He send people back to utter poverty or help them go to school? God does not only love Americans, God loves all people.
The Dream Act is not an amnesty; it is a path to EARNED legalization. It is an opportunity for the city, county, and state to recoup on the investment made in these kids through the public school education. They will be able to become fully contributing members of this society that they are already functionally a part of, although under duress. The Dream Act just makes sense.
