A small plane crashed into a Louisa County home around 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the area of U.S. Route 33 and Va. Route 22.

Officials with the Virginia State Police say the pilot of the twin-engine plane was killed when the aircraft crashed into the home on Jefferson Highway.

Officials report the plane, which was traveling from Manassas to Danville, had filled its gas tank at the Louisa County Airport and they estimate it carried about 148 gallons of fuel.

When it crashed into the home, both were engulfed in flames that firefighters had to put out.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters says the Cessna T303 Crusader twin-engine plane departed Freeman Field at the Louisa County Airport when it crashed about a quarter of a mile away. He says preliminary eyewitness accounts were that the plane's engines had quit before it crashed into the home.

Authorities say no one else was on board the plane at the time of the crash. The homeowner was in the basement of the home when the crash occurred but was able to escape unharmed.

Law enforcement officials will secure the scene overnight so an investigation into the crash can begin.

Authorities say the plane crashed through the front of the house, leaving only the tail visible outside the structure.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says U.S. Route 33 was closed in both directions following reports of a "vehicle accident."

The National Transportation Safety Board, the FAA and Virginia State Police are investigating the crash.
