The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has introduced a new license plate that will raise money for Shenandoah National Park.

The unique, eye-catching plates depict some of the iconic features of the park: a black bear, the Blue Ridge Mountains and Skyline Drive. The plates are sponsored by Shenandoah National Park Trust (the Trust), the official non-profit partner of Shenandoah National Park.

Similar to other special interest license plates, once 1,000 sets are sold, a portion of all additional sales and renewals goes to the Trust to support Shenandoah National Park. Shenandoah license plates can be ordered in person at DMV, on the DMV Website, or through Shenandoah National Park Trust’s Website.

Non-personalized Shenandoah plates cost $25/year plus registration fees; personalized plates are $35/year plus registration fees.

The steps to having a special license plate produced include the passage of state legislation and securing 350 presale orders. Virginia Senators Edd Houck and Creigh Deeds were instrumental in helping pass the bill, and the plate design was so popular that the Trust exceeded the minimum presale requirement by securing 410 applications.

“Other park partner groups are raising significant funds for their parks through their license plate programs. The Trust is excited to be on our way to doing the same for Shenandoah,” said Susan Sherman, Executive Director of Shenandoah National Park Trust.

These presale orders count toward the 1,000 threshold.
