Wednesday is St. Patrick's Day and the Harrisonburg Police Department will be conducting extra DUI enforcement.

Saturation patrols and checkpoints are scheduled throughout the city. The saturation patrols will continue through the upcoming weekend.

Police recommend that people celebrating the holiday keep in mind the following tips:

- Plan a safe and sober way home before celebrating any festivities.
- If you are impaired, use a taxi, public transportation or call a sober friend to ensure you arrive home safely.
- Contact the Harrisonburg Police Department if you see an impaired driver on the roadway.
- Don't let any of your friends drive impaired.

HPD has partnered with Virginia's Smart, Safe, and Sober campaign to promote sober driving.

There is a tone of anamosity here towards cyclists. Maybe Frank could talk with the local bicycle coalition to ask what can be done about this problem. I have to admit, I sometimes run red lights on my bike. However, it is only to get a head start when there is a narrow road ahead that I am scared of not being seen on if I am in among cars(heading North on 11 into downtown for example). Thanks for bringing attention to this. There are ways we as cyclists and you as a motorist can work together to raise awareness to the hazards of both sides. Thanks.

Read what I wrote before commenting Stacy. I DID NOT say JMU drunk drivers...I said JMU bike riders running red lights, They have THE SAME LAWS as vehicles. And they should NOT be in the left lane on Main or any other street. They CANNOT maintain the necessary speed. ALSO they are in the left lane at night with NO LIGHTS. Why do you think they are 'above the law'? The law also says they are to follow the same traffic rules as motor vehicles. Are bicycles 'exempt' from the running of red lights law?

I think this is a great idea, but I don't think it's only the JMU students that you need to worry about. It's great that they're focusing on the entire city and not just the JMU community. I know that they are a large part of the Harrisonburg community, but I don't think they are the ONLY ones running red lights or driving drunk in the city. Also, it is legal and bikers are supposed to ride with traffic and not against it. It is the drivers responsibility to share the roads.
