Dietitians at Rockingham Memorial Hospital say pre-diabetes is a clearer way of explaining what it means to have higher than normal blood glucose levels, and be on the verge of developing type two diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association reports about 60-million American adults have pre-diabetes and about half of those people do not know it.

Nurses and dietitians at RMH are holding two workshops to educate people on how to prevent the disease.

One of the meetings was held Monday night, where nurses focused on what changes should be in made in your life to prevent the disease.

Registered dietitian at RMH Elise Sinagra says, "These classes show a shift in our thinking towards prevention, which is wonderful. We no longer have physicians that are waiting for someone to have crossed the threshold into diabetes."

The second session will focus on weight management.

Dietitians say, for those who have pre-diabetes, losing five to ten percent of your body weight can delay the disease for up to seven years.
