As local governments are taking on the illegal immigration issue, one county leader in the Valley has plans to fix the problem.
Page County Supervisor Charles Hoke is looking into what other counties in Virginia have done to curb illegal immigration. But this supervisor says local governments can't take this issue on by themselves.
Hoke says there is a legal way for immigrants to come into the country. They just need to follow the immigration laws. However Hoke says, many aren't following those laws.
"Why should someone else come to this country, and disregard our laws and be treated better than the people that are here as far as the immigration system," says Hoke. "We do have a good immigration system, we just need to have it applied to everyone fairly."
Looking at the resolutions Prince William and Loudon County enacted, Hoke wants to see a similar resolution that covers three issues giving illegals incentives to become legal in the United States.
Hoke's first proposal is if a newborn's parents are illegal immigrants, than the child should be denied a birth certificate. The second proposal penalizes employers with heavy fines for hiring illegals. And the third denies illegals the services that are funded by taxpayers.
Hoke admits this can't be done alone, and he says localities need to bond together to get something done.
"This country was founded and is still working for the people, by the people, and if the silent majority would just get up off the couch and write a letter to their senators and congressmen, we would be able to address this. And if they don't, then nothing will happen," says Hoke.
Hoke says since January of 2007, localities in about 40 states have enacted resolutions for this very problem. The county attorney is looking at other resolutions, specifically those of Prince William County and Loudon County, to see if Page County could create a similar policy.

I like Bobby's comment and perspective. Although I agree that EVERYONE SHOULD abide by the law, I wonder how many of the "locals" do everything in life ethically and properly? First, how many of the "locals" are receiving unemployment (when they are capable but not willing to work?) How many of the "locals" go to school, or ate least read enough to be knowlegeable on the REAL issues, so they can provide sound opinions? REALLY ! How many of you know of other americans (the correct term is: "North American" by the way, who have chosen these third world countries to retire and live in peace ! away from all these stupid hate?
I want all these people who support and make excuses for illegal aliens to show me how bringing millions of third worlders into this country WON'T make this country more like the third world. My CHILDREN deserve better than that! My U.S. Constitution guarantees us protection against invasion. Article IV, Section 4 states: "The United States shall guarantee every state in this Union a Republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion." America is in the midst of the largest invasion in the history of the world. Do the math. State and local governments have a responsibility that supersedes passing public safety off to the Federal government. The North Carolina Legislature just passed S-229, which is a great step in the right direction. I would suggest the Board of Supervisors visit http://operationbodycount.com and http://operationfireandice.com . The first is the problem. The second is a solution. Enforcement at the local level via the ICE 287(g) Delegation of Immigration Authority Program will save lives and reduce the threat from criminal illegal aliens. As Project Director for these two FIRE Coalition projects I can assure you the threat is real, and so is the solution.
