New Home Construction Could Cause Bigger Fires

Ron Eavey is doing his best to stay positive in front of his wife, Song.

A fire tore through their Stuarts Draft home Wednesday afternoon, and reality started setting in about a day later.

Song says, "It's a brand new house. I never thought this could happen to me."

She now faces the tough task of shuffling through her belongings, most of which were destroyed, in a home the two just moved into in October.

Augusta County Fire Chief Carson Holloway says many new homes. like the Eaveys' home, are constructed with materials that give in to fires easily.

Petroleum-based asphalt used in siding and flooring may be the main culprit, and Holloway says it makes fighting fires a grueling task.

"The fire is very hard to contain because it spreads quickly, and it's hard to get to the seed of the fire," adds Holloway.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In the meantime the Eaveys are getting help from local friends and family to get back on their feet.

"It's hard to describe," adds Song. "I couldn't sleep."

For the time being, the Eaveys have moved back into a home they were selling in Fishersville.

Holloway says they should have an official cause of the fire in the next two weeks.
