Virginia State Police say that about one in four of the trucks stopped on Interstate 81 last week had to be taken out of service for safety violations.
State Police spokesman Mike Stater says that 489 trucks were stopped at random along I-81 north of Roanoke during the statewide operation called Operation Roadcheck, and 122 of them had to be taken out of service.
He says that in addition, 21 drivers were taken off the road for a variety of problems, but NO arrests were made.
Stater says the initiative was conducted for three days last week. He says the percentage of trucks taken out of service falls in line with the national average for Operation Roadcheck.
