As one life was ended, another began, and a concerned driver helped to save the new one.

A newborn fawn was rescued from the middle of Interstate 81 where it was born shortly after its mother had been hit by a vehicle.

The little fawn was stranded in the middle of the interstate until a truck driver in Raphine found it and called state police.

The fawn was taken to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro for treatment.

Officials at the center say it wouldn't have had a chance of survival without proper care.

"When I saw him first on Thursday, he was active, he was drinking well, which is a good thing," says Ariane Santa Maria-Bouvier, a veterinarian at the center. "As soon as he is going to be eating well, and is more stable on his feet, and a little bigger, we're going to move him outside with other fawns."

The Wildlife Center Executive Vice President Randy Huwa says, "During the course of the year, we will probably have about 2,500 patients. Most of those will be brought in to us by concerned citizens who find an animal in need."

Experts say, if you see an animal in need, you should not touch the animal, but call the Wildlife Center for help at 540-942-9453.
