It's been a much anticipated and planned for day for both patients and staff at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, as they moved into the new facility.
The new facility is just three miles down the road from the old RMH, but seven-and-a-half hours and 95 patients later, the new RMH is officially up and running.
RMH employee Jennifer Simmers recently became sick and was admitted to the hospital Sunday night. She had a warm welcome into the new location as the last patient transported Tuesday.
"All day today I've been thinking about the very first patient almost a hundred years ago, and now I'm the last patient on that campus and it's an honor," says Simmers.
She was actually the Patient Sequence Coordinator for Tuesday's big move, but seeing it from the patient's point of view makes her proud of her co-workers.
"So it was very heartbreaking because I really wanted to be a part of the action, but I'm a part of this side," says Simmers.
With the patient move ending earlier than planned and no kinks throughout the day, Director of Transition Judith Trumbo says the move went as well as they could've hoped.
"We're just thrilled with how the equipment moves went, and how the patient move went, and everyone is just thrilled," says Trumbo.
Thomas Schroeder helped with the move by transporting patients throughout the day.
"Patients have been having fun with this, and we've been having fun too. It's been real nice," says Schroeder.
Trumbo says it's those who helped out and worked hard that made it a great day.
"Been really a true community and team effort to bring all of this together," says Trumbo.
"It's history being made, because you'll never do this again," says Schroeder.
More than 17 different crews, from Augusta County to Shenandoah County, helped in the move.
