Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell signed a bill Tuesday that he says will expand charter schools in Virginia.
The bill will improve the application and review process for charter schools.
The final decision about whether or not to open a charter school still comes down to the local school board.
McDonnell signed the bill at a new charter school in Richmond, which is just the fourth one in the state.
"A child's educational opportunities should be determined by her intellect and work ethic, not her zip code," says McDonnell. "Charter schools are a positive and rewarding alternative for parents and children seeking more options in education."
