Staunton is a city known for its rich history and well preserved heritage, but one potential addition to the Queen City has some residents up in arms.
An adult store may be the next building on the horizon. Smoogie Bell hopes that something like this stays away from her hometown.
"Why? Why do we need it?" asks Bell.
That's a question on many people's minds in the area, though it is also a question the generates many different responses.
"We have gangs and crime so, you know, I don't see any reason why an adult store would damage our society anymore then it is already being damaged," says Lakeya Scott, who works downtown.
Scott is not alone in her opinion. Mayor Lacy King says there are many sides to the issue.
"You're looking at one: Can a business like that operate in the city of Staunton?" says King. "And two, where can it operate?"
He says there hasn't been an official application submitted yet by the adult store, though while the possibility still looms, the community waits.
"Well, I don't have really any comment on the particular porn shop," says John Clem, who resides in Staunton. "I'm Christian and I follow those guidelines, and I think that's enough said."
Robert Seabrooks came to the Queen City from Sterling, VA. He relates the situation to that of his hometown outside of Washington D.C.
"From an outsider's perspective, I don't think it'll hurt the community. One thing about it is, you still have a choice about whether you want to go to that facility or not," says Seabrooks.
"It would be at the cost of the young people because they have enough negative images everywhere," says Bell. "Why bring something to a wholesome place like home?"
So many questions and so many answers, and the Mayor says the city's decision is completely unknown.
"You have the actual development of the ordinance, then you have a public hearing, then you have the Council's action. So the time frame is kind of difficult to predict on this," said King.
Republicans in Staunton will host a forum Tuesday night to try to stop this store from becoming a reality. The forum will take place at the City Council chambers and guest speakers are scheduled to discuss the dangers of pornography, as well as its use in the United States.

Melissa of Staunton: Let's just keep praying! Here again, after all the protesting and complaints, they're going to open it anyway. That shows the store owner(s) are just out for self-gain, and don't care about the community or the people who are going to patronize their store. Pornography exploits mainly women and children, and if we weren't exposed to it, there wouldn't be such an increase in sex crimes. But they're not listening because they don't care about anyone but themselves and making money.
destroy...morals....corruption. You're welcome.
As a Christian, I feel we have enough out there to destory our morels values. Why do we, as a community, feel the need to bring more cruption to this great town. Right now, we have extensive drug use and manufacturing in the valley, gangs, and several sex offenders in our area. Why fuel this way of life any longer.
