Budget cuts and economic struggles are nothing new to the Commonwealth.
Until now, the government has only looked at ideas on how to boost the economy from the inside.
State Sen. Mark Obenshain says, "As we are going through this process, it makes sense to look at how the government operates and to toss out traditional notions on what has always worked and what has to be done."
Obenshain joined Valley residents Wednesday at the Augusta County Government Center.
Together, they offered ideas to Gov. Bob McDonnell's Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring.
"With the economic conditions we face right now we have no choice. It is imperative that we implement savings and efficiency ideas," adds Obenshain.
Among those ideas is Obenshain's desire to sell the state's liquor stores.
He says, "We have a monopoly and we operate a retail operation as a state operation. I don't believe the state should be in the business of selling distilled spirits."
The move would generate millions of dollars in revenue for the state, which could mean fewer cuts down the road.
Obenshain says, "I think it can be done in a socially responsible way that doesn't put liquor stores next to churches or schools. It is imperative that we respect those moral and social obligations we have."
