In June of 2005, Harrisonburg passed an ordinance allowing adult stores to open up businesses in the city, but not without a lot of restrictions attached.
The city ordinance only allows an adult business to open up in specific areas of the city that are a certain distance away from schools, places of worship, and residential neighborhoods. There are currently three adult stores in Harrisonburg.
"They were here before the ordinance was established, and so they were grandfathered in, which means that they can operate indefinitely as long as they meet the restrictions of the ordinances in the places that they've always located," says Miriam Dickler, a spokesperson for Harrisonburg. "It's not the business of an ordinance to go in and kick out an established business."
Since the ordinance was passed, no adult businesses have applied for a permit to open a store in Harrisonburg.
