Kenneth Baker had very little to say outside the Augusta County Courthouse Thursday morning.

However, it's what he said inside the courthouse that could put him behind bars for more than 60 years.

He pleaded guilty to three charges including second-degree murder.

Miles away, Alan Acord received the news of the hearing at his Churcvhille home.

Acord lives in the same neighborhood where Baker's alleged victim, Ruth Mays, was found dead 12 years ago.

Acord says, "I thought that it was something that doesn't happen around here. It was a very unusual thing."

Acord's daughter went to school with Baker.

Medical records show he had a lifelong history of mental health problems.

Still, neighbors like Acord were shocked when he was ruled incompetent to stand trial back in 1999, and the murder charges were dropped.

"I believe in second chances, but I feel like he has had his second chance," adds Acord.

While in a mental health facility, new charges surfaced against Baker, this time for allegedly fondling a 97-year-old patient at the facility.

Sympathy is something Acord has now thrown out.

He says, "I feel that he needs to serve the full time. He has had a second chance. Don't give him a chance to do something like this again."

If given the maximum sentence, Baker could spend the next 63 years in prison.
