Rescue workers in Grottoes report that a child riding a bike was hit by a car Thursday night.

The accident happened on 18th Street.

Rescue crews say the boy was taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

However, a family friend says the nine year old has since been moved to the intensive care unit at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

The boy is reportedly drifting in and out of consciousness.

He has "progressive" head injuries, bleeding in the brain and a fractured skull. The family friend says it's become a waiting game for doctors, who are watching to see if they can get the bleeding stopped.

The nerve of some people. I have a 10 yr. old son who has 3 helmets and although he may leave the house with it on, he goes to the playground and takes it off. Did ANY of you "adults" wear a helmet when you were 10? I think NOT!!! While some of these comments are warranted, it appears as though some of you could benefit from getting an education and stop "casting stones". This family has suffered a tragic event and could use the time to heal and get back to LIFE....not listen to ignorant, uneducated, loud mouths. Maybe think before you type.....or if you are so brave, tell it to their face.... NOT hiding behind your thinly veiled attempt at being a couch coach....that is rubbish. I guess there is no cure for STUPID!!

Anonymous, I find it interesting that you cast stones at the parents, while cloaking your identity. What? Couldn't even give your first name???? I am sure those parents have enough self-blame and "what-ifs" rolling around in their heads without outsiders pointing their fingers at them! Are helmets a good idea? Of course they are! And if you feel that strongly about it, perhaps instead of anonymously digging your heels into people that are already hurt and may lose the most precious thing in life, you should go and start campaigning at your local elementary school and convince the kids there how important and cool it is to wear a helmet! While I am glad your parents taught you to wear a helmet, it would have been nice if they would have also taught you not to kick a person when they are down!!!

There are many kids in Grottoes who ride around Grottoes with no supervision and no helmets all the time. Many people have come close to hitting the kids on bikes who dart out in front of vehicles all the time. This is very common and we are lucky that there has not been a serious injury before now. Unfortunately there are many kids who are very careless and carefree on their bikes because they are very young and dont have experience and common sense yet, by no fault of their own- they are babies still!! Parents have now been reminded that they will have to be more careful about letting their little guys and gals go out biking on their own. And remember to keep your eyes open for bicyclists especially during summer!! Parents should maybe consider making sure that bikes are safe, helmets are on and small children should be riding with an adult.
