A major change planned for Rockingham Memorial Hospital could mean new services for patients, but hospital officials say that likely won't happen soon.
The hospital is planning to affiliate with Sentara Healthcare, which is based out of Norfolk.
RMH president and CEO Jim Krauss says, after the affiliation happens, a team will start a process of looking at what gaps there are in services.
He says, based on what Sentara can provide, they'll start planning what to bring to the Valley.
"In the longer term, I think [patients will] see new ideas, new services that will benefit this community that maybe we weren't able to do on our own. And, that will be a positive. At the beginning, I don't think there'll be any change for the patient at all," says Krauss.
Officials are saying not to look for big changes soon.
The affiliation alone could take more than six months to finalize.

Darn shame. I don't believe Krauss and his Board fully appreciate what is ahead for them. They will simply become an arm of the mother ship. Forced changes will come, mandated charge backs will extract dollars from the organization back to Norfolk, and RMH will become nothing more than a cost center. Morale will decline over time, and RMH will be in worse shape as an entity than they are now. Seems like a great idea pre-merger, but in the end, they'll regret it forever more. Too bad they can't preserver through the tough times and realize the grass only looks greener. Their excitement now is filled with visions of collaboration, partnership, and support. The reality they will eventually realize, not day one...but it will come, will be that they are owned. There's a big difference between collaboration and ownership. Take it from someone who knows. Best of luck to you. The monopolizing mother ship just gobbled up one more. What a shame for RMH.
