SHENANDOAH VALLEY, Va –- On Tuesday afternoon, the Fort Defiance Chief Election Officer said the lines of eager voters did not die down since they opened that morning.

On voter said he had never had to wait this long in past elections.

In Stuarts Draft at about lunch time, lines were out the door. Voters said they waited from 10 minutes to half hour in the two precincts.

One voter said she planned to go vote when she knew lines would be the shortest.

"Normally there aren't many people when I come vote,” said Linda Thompson, a local voter. “It doesn't matter what time of day and normally I would think before and after work. But this is midday so I figured this would be a slow time."

Another voter said the heavy turn-out showed a renewed interest in the American democratic system.

"It shows that the American people need to vote because in the years past you could walk right in and vote. It shows to me that American people are ready for some kind of a change," said Jack Wine, another local voter.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, about half of registered voters in Harrisonburg, Waynesboro and Shenandoah County came to the polls. Fifty-six percent of Rockingham County voters and 42 percent of voters in Page County cast their ballots.

We are still waiting on numbers from Staunton and Augusta County.
