Virginia high school students are above the national average on the ACT college entrance exam for 2011.

Results were released on Tuesday that showed 76 percent of Virginia students who took the ACT were ready for a freshman level English class. That's compared to just 66 percent of students nationwide.

At Lee High School in Staunton, Principal Mark Rowicki says the news isn't entirely unexpected.

"Am I surprised? Probably not. Because I know we have a good system here at Lee High School, I know we have a good system in Staunton and in school systems all around us," Dr. Rowicki explained.

While Virginia students outperforming their peers is good news to some, college admissions officials stress that tests like the ACT are only one factor in the admissions process.

Mary Baldwin College Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management Andy Modlin says, "What we find is that the SAT and the ACT are limited in their ability to predict success in college. They are to some extent and they are an important part of the application process, but they are not the most important."

Modlin says they consider numerous factors including GPA, courses taken, and activities a student participates in when making a decision about admitting a student.

"What we are interested in is what activities are a student involved in. What sort of leadership roles have they held?" Modlin said.

High schools are also well aware of the fact that college entrance exams like the ACT and SAT might not be for all of their students.

"What we try to do is to prepare all of the students, every one, so that they are ready for whatever they want to do after high school whether it's go to work, go into the military, or go to college," explained Dr. Rowicki.
