A package of bills aimed at attacking illegal immigration cleared the state House of Delegates Tuesday.

The ten bills, introduced by House Republicans, are opposed by numerous groups that claim they promote discrimination.

House Bill 2332 would require law enforcement officers to ask for citizenship documentation.

It's the highest profile of the bills because it would require officials to inquire about a person's citizenship status upon arrest.

Currently, legal status is checked only when someone is taken to jail.

House Bill 1465 would require public colleges and universities to have a policy denying enrollment to illegal immigrants.

It would require Virginia's public colleges and universities to have a written policy denying enrollment to illegal, or undocumented, immigrants.

Another bill would allow Virginia State Police to enforce federal immigration laws.

Still another would require businesses with 15 or more employees and government contractors to use the federal E-Verify system to determine legal status of employees.

Another would require local social services to verify legal citizenship of applicants for public assistance.

Opponents call the bills racial profiling.

This series of anti-illegal immigration bills has some in the Valley Hispanic community concerned.

About the bills themselves as well as the atmosphere that could result in Virginia.

Many people are worried that, by passing these bills, it will only make things worse about existing tension between them and other Americans.

Some in the Hispanic community say they are a part of Virginia, and they pay taxes and contribute to society. However, they say passing several of these bills will only isolate them.

Many feel that by specifically passing HB 1465 would actually hurt Virginia's economy.

Isabel Castillo, a community activist, says, "It just goes against our value. We want an educated Virginia. It just contributes to the economy as well. It's money that will be lost to the Virginia economy."

In addition to the state possibly loosing money, the Hispanic community also feels some of these bills can prevent a better relationship between them and the police.

Chelvy Lopez owns a salon in Harrisonburg and she's an American citizen, but she says people still treat her differently.

She wants people in the Valley to change their perception of the Hispanic community and to know that not every immigrant is a criminal. She says they just want to live the American dream.

Castillo also wants to remind everyone that this country was founded by immigrants, and they want to contribute to the community just like everyone else.

He says, "We want an educated Virginia, and we want to give opportunities to our children."

So much ignorance. I do not want more illegal aliens in America either but lets face it. we need them (aside from the bad ones) so I believe a new law should be made which deports every single alien that did something bad (aside from coming illegally). & about the other ones...prob. give them some sort of way for them to improve their social status. give them a chance. like the chance we get when we're born. put yourself in their positions. after all, we all come from immigrants aside from Native Americans. if you're Native American, you're allowed to want them and all of us out of mother America...
