HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Students at James Madison University now have the chance to rent a bike for up to a week.

It's part of a program formerly known as the Cycle Share program.

For the first time UREC is now renting out the bikes through the Adventure Program.

Organizers said it's a chance of course, for UREC to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Assistant Director for Adventure and TEAM Programs Guy Debrun said it's also a way to further the bike culture on campus.

The bike program was run by the James Madison University Earth Club before.

UREC is already planning on ways to grow the program on campus.

They currently rent out 16 bikes to students for a small fee on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Students can check out the bikes and use them for a week at a time.

UREC would like to build a covered area, so the bikes aren't in the elements constantly.

Debrun said they plan to expand the fleet eventually.

"We're very supportive of a biking culture and community so if we can be part of that The idea behind this is for students to have the opportunity to check a bike out for a week and see if it's something that can suit their lifestyle and then hopefully head to a local retailer and purchase a bike. We're not trying to provide a bike for the whole year or whole semester. It's more of an opportunity to try one out," said Debrun.

Debrun said the bikes are used for excursions now through the Adventure program.

In the future, they are looking at adding mountain bikes and considering an outdoor maintenance center.

That center would have a pump and other basic tools for riders. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
