CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia Schools Superintendent Jorea Marple has been fired.
Media outlets report that the state Board of Education voted 5-2 on Thursday to terminate Marple's contract.
Marple asked the board to provide a cause for her dismissal. But board members didn't give a reason.
Board members Jenny Phillips and Priscilla Haden opposed the move. They announced shortly after the vote that they would resign from the board.
Marple had served as the state's schools chief since March 1, 2011. She previous served as deputy superintendent.
The board's decision comes as the Legislature prepares to tackle the state's education system. A recent audit of West Virginia's public schools describes a low-performing education system rigidly controlled by a state-level bureaucracy and a thick stack of policy-directing laws.
